What is the CIA?

The Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) is a certification from The IIA, The Institute of Internal Auditors. It shows you understand internal audit: how to plan and run audits, assess risks and controls, and report findings to management.

Internal auditors work inside an organization. They check that its controls work, that it follows the rules, and that its risks are well managed.

Who is the CIA for?

The CIA suits you if you work in internal audit, or want to. It also fits work in risk management, compliance and internal controls.

Banks, large companies and public bodies often have internal audit teams, so the skills behind the CIA are useful across many sectors.

What does it take to earn the CIA?

You pass The IIA's CIA exam, which comes in a series of parts. The IIA also looks at your education and at your work experience in internal audit or a related field.

You agree to follow The IIA's Code of Ethics, and once certified you complete continuing education to keep the CIA active.

Requirements can change. Check The IIA website for the current details before you plan.
