What is the CMA?

The Certified Management Accountant (CMA) is a professional certification from IMA, the Institute of Management Accountants. It focuses on the accounting work done inside a company: planning, budgeting, managing costs, analyzing performance and supporting business decisions.

The CMA exam has two parts. Together they cover financial planning, analysis, control and decision support.

Who is the CMA for?

The CMA suits you if you work, or want to work, in a company's finance team. Think of work in cost accounting, budgeting, financial analysis or finance management.

It is a good fit if you enjoy using numbers to help managers decide what to do next, rather than auditing other companies' accounts.

What does it take to earn the CMA?

You pass both parts of the CMA exam. IMA also asks for a degree from a recognized college or university, or an accepted professional certification, and a period of work experience in management accounting or financial management.

You join IMA as a member, commit to its ethics standards, and keep the certification active through continuing education.

Requirements can change. Check the IMA website for the current details before you plan.
