What is the CPA?
The Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is the license for public accountants in the United States. Each US state's board of accountancy grants the license. The AICPA, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, develops the Uniform CPA Examination that candidates take.
The CPA covers auditing, financial accounting and reporting, tax and business topics. Many international accounting and audit firms recognize it.
In Lebanon, the US CPA is separate from the local certified public accountant title, which the Lebanese Association of Certified Public Accountants (LACPA) grants. 4Finance prepares students for both exams.
Who is the CPA for?
The CPA suits you if you want to work in audit, tax or advisory, often at an accounting firm. It is also useful in finance roles at companies that report under US standards or work with US clients.
If you plan to work mainly inside one company's finance team, compare it with the CMA first.
What does it take to earn the CPA?
Each US state board sets its own rules. Most ask for university study in accounting and business, passing every section of the Uniform CPA Examination, and a period of supervised work experience.
Many states also ask for an ethics exam or course, and licensed CPAs complete continuing education to keep their license. Candidates from outside the United States can apply, but the rules depend on the state you choose.
