What is the SHRM-CP?

The SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) is a certification from SHRM, the Society for Human Resource Management. It covers HR knowledge, such as recruiting, employee relations and workforce planning.

It also covers the people skills HR work depends on, such as communication and ethical practice.

Who is the SHRM-CP for?

The SHRM-CP suits you if you work in HR day to day, for example in recruitment, employee relations, pay and benefits, or HR administration. It also suits you if you are planning a move into HR.

If you lead HR strategy at a senior level, SHRM's senior credential, the SHRM-SCP, may fit better.

What does it take to earn the SHRM-CP?

You pass the SHRM-CP exam, which tests both HR knowledge and how you would handle real workplace situations. SHRM sets who can sit the exam, and it has changed these rules over time.

To keep the certification, you recertify by earning professional development credits through continuing education, or by passing the exam again.

Requirements can change. Check the SHRM website for the current details before you plan.
